check valve

In French: clapet anti-retour

Definition

A small valve that lets water through in one direction only. Fitted under a sprinkler head at the bottom of a slope, it stops the water left in the pipes from draining out of the lowest head after the zone shuts off, which causes puddles. Not to be confused with a backflow preventer, which protects drinking water.
