winterization (irrigation system)

In French: hivernisation (système d'arrosage)

Definition

Getting an irrigation system ready before the first frosts: shut off the water, then empty the pipes by manual drains, automatic drains or a compressed-air blowout. Blowouts carry risks; Rain Bird recommends a specialist. An above-ground backflow preventer is also insulated without blocking its vents, and the system is started up again in spring.

Also called

  • blowout
  • fall shutdown

Other names in French

  • purge à l'air
  • fermeture automnale
