Guide d'installation, Pavés

Techo-Bloc

Guide from a Quebec maker, read by the research (pp. 62 to 64 and details). Its base thickness table by use and soil (p. 64) is the basis of the calculator's values. Paraphrased, never copied.

What we take from it

  • The excavation adds up the paver, bedding and base thicknesses and extends past the edge restraint by at least the base thickness.
  • The base table separates pedestrian and vehicular surfaces and sand or gravel soils from clay or silt soils; the latter need a markedly thicker base, and soils very prone to frost justify advice from a geotechnical professional.
  • The finished surface needs at least a 1.5% slope and the excavation bottom must mirror that slope.
  • On clay, the soil can be amended with lime and crushed stone before compaction, then a geotextile goes on the bottom and sides.
  • Base in lifts of about 100 mm, wetted and compacted in every direction with a 22 kN plate; surface checked with a 3 m straightedge to within 10 mm.
  • Spiked edging on the compacted base, or a 45 degree concrete haunch, reinforced where traffic is heavy.
  • Concrete sand bed of about 25 mm, screeded on 25 mm rails, left loose, only over the area paved that day.
  • Hand laying, tight joints, pulling from several pallets at once to blend colours.
  • Dry surface, sweep, compact, remove the excess, then wet as directed on the bag.
  • The maker warns to compact pavers with a protective pad to avoid scuffs and chips.
  • The maker presents installation on a roof membrane as a separate detail, on pedestals.
  • Permeable paving needs an open-graded stone base over a reservoir, and a perforated drain to an outlet when infiltration is partial or none.
  • Pavers are made to CSA A231.2, which includes a freeze-thaw test with de-icing salts.
  • Techo-Bloc gives 150 to 200 mm of base for a patio on sand or gravel, 250 to 350 mm on clay or silt, 200 to 350 mm and 300 to 500 mm for a driveway, and compacts in lifts of about 100 mm.
  • Techo-Bloc's guide gives the base thicknesses to compare against.
